In 2010, Victorinox introduced its latest addition to its line of fine watches – the Victorinox Swiss Army AirBoss Mach 8 Special Edition The AirBoss Mach 8 Special Edition mechanical watch is another addition to the AirBoss series, popular for their military style and premium features. Although it shares some features with the Hamilton X-Mach, the overall style is very different because its chronos have a super compressor style internal bezel. This coupled with its innovative placement of the crown and push settings on the left side of the watch help make this truly unique and desirable time piece. Priced around $2,000 – it is an excellent entry piece for anyone beginning to collect fine watches.
The inspiration for the Victorinox Mach 8 came from the “Air Boss” or person in charge of meticulously timing the arrival and departure of aircraft from high aloft in the air traffic control tower. Consequently, its hallmark is precision engineering that ensures reliability and accuracy. In fact, it allows 1/10 of a second precision timing. There are 60 second, 30 minute and 12 hour counters as well. The countdown timer is located in the two o’clock position and set by a specific crown. It has about a 42 hour reserve on the winder according to some users.
Like its precursor - the Mach 3 – it comes with a chronograph whose start/stop button are in the 8 o’clock position. This is great for right handed people because it is easy to push with the right thumb. The date widow and crown can be found at the nine o’clock position. A second crown activates the internal bi-directional rotating bezel that surrounds the dial for countdowns.
If you are intrigued with the inner workings of fine watches you’ll love the transparent “exhibition” back. Just flip your watch over and be prepared to be mesmerized by the precise mechanical self-winding movement. The movement is actually the Valjoux 7550 – a common Swiss movement - well known for its accuracy and precision. Classic black leather strap with grey contrast stitching and closes with a push-button deployment safety clasp. Overall, the black strap gives this fine timepiece an elegant flair.
